I’m in a café in a rainforest, 1500 meters above sea level. Tropical plants and organisms live in mysterious symbiosis’ everywhere around us and I can see the sunlight through great green leaves. The plants here are incredible, I’m completely in awe of the avocado trees and fiddle leaf fig trees and the great palms, monsteras the endless varieties of green I don’t know the names of. But they’re brilliant.
Well over two weeks ago I arrived on the other side of the world and felt like lack of control was the best term to describe how I felt and experienced the first few days. People everywhere, different clothes, norms, chaos on the roads, no sense of direction and the sudden, uncomfortable and very strong awareness of privilege. Now I feel like I’m letting go, surrendering to the unknown and accepting what I cannot control, and also a new drive to take action where I can. It’s a good feeling and with a lot of things having happened these three weeks, I think it’s the best timed holiday I’ve ever had.
Tomorrow I’m heading back to Bergen, winter and is to me a normal February. But right now I’m here in a rainforest in Kigali and though I’m not used to life here yet, I’ve definitely gotten in to a sort of everyday habit that makes me very happy. Here some snippets of what it can look like.
Driving around town, looking at life, trying to ignore the lack of rules and always amazed by how clean the streets are. I’ve lost count of how many cafés Loris and I have been to. Beautiful places, great coffee and food.Like this one in a rainforest. How cool is this?! I mean, coming from mid-winter Norway to this has been an incredible relief and I think I’ll leave Norway every January from now on. I’ve been on many walks always amazed by the plants and wildlife here. Just for reference; I’m 1.72m and look at those branches. Absolutely mental. It’s not easy going for walks here as there’s so much to look at. I mean, being the daughter of a geologist and a botanist and working with music and aesthetics myself might have created the worst (or best!) level of enthusiasm for plants and wildlife possible. Especially for those who just wants to go for a walk and is “just not quite there”. Hehe, sorry but not sorry, folks!Out and about.I’ve bought half a shops’ worth of baskets and I’m super happy with every single one of them. But seriously though, plants are the coolest. Look at this cactus! Amazing! The sun starts setting around 5pm and by 6pm all the mosquitoes are ready to attack me, so it’s nice to get back to my friends before that happens. Playing, listen to and talking about music whenever there’s time and energy for it. I’ve missed it so much!Sunset in the garden and tomorrow I’m going home to Norway.
