Slow Winter Morning

It’s winter and I’m slowing down. It feels like nature itself is telling me to go slowly, gently and with care. So far it’s been a cold winter with a lot of heavy weather, strong winds, icy roads and a lot of snow. I can’t get my car up the hill and I have a winter uniform that I’ve moved in to (black boots, a green coat, beanie and a balaclava). Moving my body takes more energy when it’s cold and I need more sleep. Getting out of bed in the dark winter mornings requires more self control and determination then during any other season, and going for a walk after work just isn’t happening because the couch is too tempting. But it’s still beautiful. The sunsets are long and the horizon is painted with pastel aquarelles of pink and blue. The sun itself is pale and though I can see her, I have to stand still to feel the warm sun rays on my face.

Today it was an explosion of white gold as the sun rose over the trees. I went outside and walked down the hill to where my car is now parked. For good it seemed yesterday in the snow. I opened the door on the side where the wind had blown the snow aside, and managed to start the car before I began the task of getting rid of the snow and ice covering the rest of the car. It’s a job I’ll tell you. Cold and beautiful and snow crystals whirling up in the wind as I scraped the ice and snow off in the morning sun. I stopped and looked and slowed down for a moment in the magic of a cold winter.
